Hedgehogs Without Borders

On March 3, 2005, Jessica and Tim set off on an epic 18-month round-the-world adventure. That trip may be over now, but the storytelling has only just begun!

This website is here both as a record of our trip and a resource for other travelers. Please feel free to leave us a comment at the bottom of our journal entries!

:: Entries about England ::

After seven months in Spanish-speaking countries, it was wonderful to be in the birthplace of the English language. We started our two-week tour in Essex, with our lovely friends Michael and Sophie (whom we first met in Huacachina, Peru). After a daytrip to Cambridge with them, we went down to East Croydon to visit Tim's aunt and cousins.

Next stop: St. Albans, for a bit of sight-seeing and a beer festival with our dear friends Becky and Andy (whom we first met in the Galapagos Islands). After that, another quick stop in East Croydon (and a wonderful lunch with our sweet friends David and Sarah, whom we first met in Buenos Aires, Argentina) and then we were off to Leeds for five days. There we were in the company of our beloved Paul and Caroline (whom we also first met in Buenos Aires), spent Jessica's 28th birthday, and were fed glorious amounts of food.

Finally, it was back to East Croydon once more for some more lovely time with Tim's family, a whirlwind tour of London, and to catch our flight to Istanbul, Turkey!

Happy 28th Birthday, Jessica!

Jessica’s favorite color is green. This is because when she was a little girl all the other children liked blue and red, and she felt sorry for green.

Itinerary Matters

We’ve been traveling for over 7 months now. That sounds strange, doesn’t it? We’re no longer newbies at this whole round-the-world gig. Our trip, depending on when we return, could potentially be half over at this point.

Welcome to England!

We were looking forward to this break, this little vacation within our trip. Two weeks of staying with family and friends. For the first time in almost seven months we could get off of our plane and wander into the airport without having to think.

48 hours in St. Albans

On our last night together before leaving the Galapagos Islands, Becky and Andy invited us to stay with them in St. Albans when we got to England. Touched, we happily accepted. The next day, waiting at the airport, we discovered that they already had an entire itinerary planned for us when we visited them.

Thirteen More of Our Favorite Photos

We’ve chosen 13 photos this time and they cover our time in Ecuador (except the Galapagos Islands), Spain, England, and a sneak peek at Turkey.

A Family Connection in London

My only prior visit to London was four years ago, an enjoyable eight days visiting my aunt and cousins (an embarrassing amount of it spent at Camden Market buying enormous boots and various articles of black clothing).

From Buenos Aires to Leeds

We initially met Paul and Caroline on the second day of our trip, during our first visit to Buenos Aires. Immediately the four of us clicked and we spent several more nights exploring that beautiful city together before going our separate ways.

From Farmers’ Fields to Fish n’ Chips

There are certain places in the world that you can picture perfectly without ever having been there. The English countryside is such a place.
