On March 3, 2005, Jessica and Tim set off on an epic 18-month round-the-world adventure. That trip may be over now, but the storytelling has only just begun!
This website is here both as a record of our trip and a resource for other travelers. Please feel free to leave us a comment at the bottom of our journal entries!

First stop: Vilcabamba, a quiet mountain town set in the picturesque "Valley of Longevity", where we will do some serious relaxing. Then it's off to Quito to arrange a Galapagos cruise, and from there deep into the Amazon rain forest, to the Yachana jungle lodge. Then to Baños for more relaxing (plus hiking and four-wheeling among waterfalls), and to Riobamba to ride a train called "The Devil's Nose". Finally, from Quito we'll fly to the the glorious Galapagos Islands for more than a week. After that, we're off to Spain!

Ecuador: First Impressions
The view outside the window all the way through Peru had been an endless expanse of barren scrub interrupted only by the occasional ten-foot pile of garbage. The only way to really experience the Galapagos is to book a cruise. [read more...]

Yachana Lodge: Four Anecdotes
We are now forever spoiled. Whenever we have a guide, they are going to have to measure up to the standard set by Juan Kunchikuy. For five days in the jungle, he was our guide, our teacher, and our interpreter. And in those five days, he became something else, too: our friend. [read more...]

Magic Memories
Our guide had told us that every day spent in the Galapagos Islands will be more amazing than the previous one before it. When he first said this it was hard to believe, but he was right: every day there kept getting better and better. [read more...]

The Enchanted Islands
There was another pool, just over another stretch of painful lava, one which Mauricio would only let us into three at a time. When people returned from this pool, they wouldn’t say what they’d seen, only that it had been amazing. [read more...]
