NOTE: Becuase our itinerary keeps evolving as we travel, this page is constantly out-of-date. You have been warned.
First stop: Buenos Aires, for tango shows, fútbol games, and Recoleta cemetery. Then it’s off to Uruguay, for the beaches of La Paloma and Punta del Diablo. Then back to Buenos Aires and south to Puerto Madryn, for penguins and orcas. Then west to the mountains of El Bolsón and the broad, tree-lined streets of Mendoza. Then back once more to Buenos Aires, for a month of Spanish lessons and sightseeing. Next up: the waterfalls of Iguazu and the canyons of Salta.
Tupiza and the southwest circuit, with red and green lakes of borax and sulfur. Ulyuni, and the miles and miles of barren salt flats that comprise the most desolate place in the world. The city of La Paz, which at 3.3km is the highest capital city in the world. The steaming Yungas, and three-day treks through mountainous jungle. The stunning beauty of Lake Titicaca, over 4km above sea level and dotted with picturesque islands.
We were forced to cut Bolivia from our itinerary due to political turmoil there.
First stop: Arequipa, “the white city”, to see the condors fly over nearby Colca Canyon. Then it’s off to see beautiful and tranquil Huacachina, a picture-perfect desert oasis. Next stop: Cuzco, and the majestic “lost city” of Machu Picchu. After that, a quick flight to the city of Piura, via the capitol of Lima, and the next bus to Ecuador!
We start out Vilcabamba, a quiet mountain town set in the picturesque “Valley of Longevity”, where we will do some serious relaxing. Then it’s off to Quito to arrange a Galapagos cruise, and from there deep into the Amazon rain forest, to the Yachana jungle lodge. Then to Baños for more relaxing (plus hiking and four-wheeling among waterfalls), and to Riobamba to ride a train called “The Devil’s Nose”. Finally, from Quito we’ll fly to the the glorious Galapagos Islands for more than a week.
We’ll fly from Quito, Ecuador to Madrid, Spain, where we’ll take in as much of the country as we can in two and a half weeks: Seville, Barcelona, etc. (If we have time, we may even hit Morocco.) Then we’ll fly to England, where we’ll be able to visit with some of Tim’s family and with some good friends.
We start our two months in Turkey with two full weeks in Istanbul, one of the worlds truly great romantic cities. The highlight of Turkey for us will be Cappadocia, where the ancient stone Fairy Chimneys were carved by natures into spires as tall as skyscrapers, where churches are carved into cliffsides, and where there are entire underground cities. After that, we’ll spend some time working our way along the Mediterranean and Agean coasts, eventually arriving back in Istanbul. From there, we’re taking a bus to Greece, making a few stops before arriving in Athens. From there, it’s off to Southeast Asia!
After celebrating Christmas in Bangkok, Thailand, we’ll make our way north,
past the ruined cities of Ayuthaya and Sukhothai to the northern
city of Chiang Mai. There, we’ll ride elephants, converse with
monks, and take endless cooking classes. From there, we’ll make our
way into Laos, home to spectacular temples, breathtaking scenery,
and some of the friendliest people in the world. Then it’s on to
Vietnam, where we’ll try to take in both traditional Hanoi in the
north and bustling Ho Chi Minh City in the south.
Cambodia’s capitol city, Phnom Penh, has a number of gripping
testaments to the atrocities commited in the 1970s by the Khmer
Rouge (including the infamous Killing Fields). Along Cambodia’s
southern coast are gorgeous beaches, far less overdeveloped than
anything in Thailand. To the northwest are the world-famous ancient
temples of Angkor Wat, some now completely overgrown by jungle. It
is said the only things in the world that rival them are the
pyramids in Egypt and a similarly colossal group of temples in
nearby Burma, our next stop. Burma (also called Myanmar) is
controlled by a ruthless military dictatorship, but other travelers
there have without exception praised the natural beauty of the
country and the heartwarming friendliness of its inhabitants.
Back over to Thailand, where we will explore the beaches and
islands in the south, on our way to Malaysia. Malaysia, of course,
has beaches and islands of its own, some of the most beautiful ones
in the world. We’ll take the famous “Jungle Railroad” through the
forested interior, to the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. There,
sadly, we will book a flight back home, and begin dreaming about our
next journey…
