Hedgehogs Without Borders

On March 3, 2005, Jessica and Tim set off on an epic 18-month round-the-world adventure. That trip may be over now, but the storytelling has only just begun!

This website is here both as a record of our trip and a resource for other travelers. Please feel free to leave us a comment at the bottom of our journal entries!

The Stuffy Who Fell On Th...

We’ve received several questions from family, friends, and fans (ok, readers: but fans worked better with the alliteration) asking if we’re going to continue to post on Hedgehogs Without Borders now that we’ve arrived home.

The answer is decidedly yes.

As many of you know, we had to fast forward over several stories from our trip. There simply wasn’t enough time to enjoy traveling and to post properly all of the time. And as a result, there are hundreds of untold tidbits that we still plan on sharing. We’ve alluded to some of these tidbits in teasers like here or here or here.

But there are also the stories that we haven’t even mentioned in teasers. Like our car accident on a road through the middle of nowhere, or our tuk-tuk accident with the slightly intoxicated driver, or the obscenely large monsters who made crunching noises from the corner of our room one night in the middle of the jungle, or the sweet deaf boy we made friends with on the banks of the Mekong River, or how we got invited to attend an elaborate funeral/cremation/carnival for three Buddhist monks who had died recently…and all of those things were just in Cambodia. There’s a dozen or so other countries to delve deeper into too.

Hedgehogs Without Borders is as much of a link for us between our friends (old and new) and family, as it is a place for our memories. For us, our trip was the trip of a lifetime (although plans for future trips are slowly in the works!)…I can’t count the number of times Tim or I have re-read past entries, reliving those precious moments as we do. It’ll be nice over the next few years to try to complete our written memories.

As far as the website itself goes, there will be a few changes here and there. Namely, we hope to one day fix our Photo Gallery. (I think it’s been broken since we were in Peru in June 2005!) And we hope to upload more photos to it too. (We only posted photos from our 3 months in Argentina and 10 days in Uruguay. It takes a surprising amount of time to choose photos, upload them, and write narrative for them.) We’re also going to start beefing up our Resources and Links page which is sorely underdeveloped at the moment, update our Frequently Asked Questions page, and add to our Pre-Trip and Post-Trip sections too. And we’ll finally stop the counter from counting the days of our trip (once we’ve decided what the official stopping date for our trip was….).

One of the most important things, to us, that we’ll be doing is thanking those friends who donated money to our dream. We promised our supporters to write about how their contribution made a difference to our trip, what special or unusual thing we were able to do because of their help. We’ve shared a few of those stories already, but not nearly all of them. So in the coming months, keep a look out for your story. And as always, we remain extremely grateful.

The biggest change to the website is going to be a new kind of post called “Travel Tip Tuesdays” (there I go with the alliteration again). Although we’ll still primarily be telling stories about our trip, we also have a lot of travel tips to share. Everything from how to go about planning a trip like this, to what it’s like traveling as a couple, to gear and packing suggestions, to the names of our favorite restaurants and hotels/hostals around the world. Knowing that the nitty-gritty details might not appeal to a larger audience, we’ve decided to designate Tuesdays as the day for those types of posts (hence the name “Travel Tip Tuesdays”). That way, our readers who enjoy the stories more than the tips can skip past those entries if they like. And our readers who enjoy the tips more than the stories will know where to look.

Travel Tip Tuesdays will start sometime in November. It would start sooner…but we have a bit of a secret Hedgehog mission coming up, one that will be taking us out of the country (yup already!) and back to Southeast Asia for another two weeks. (But no worries Mom and Dad, we are coming back! We even have a return flight!) Details of said secret Hedgehog mission will be revealed once the mission is complete and (hopefully) successful. (And there we go with the teasers again!)

Although this is far from the end of our website, our arrival home does bring about a change. And so with that we’d like to say thank you for reading us, for commenting and for keeping our spirits up on the days that travel was hard, and for sharing our dream to travel the world together. We look forward to sharing even more of our dream in the coming years and we hope that you’ll still be with us every post along the way.

I’m gald to hear that you are still going to post things on your site since I’ve become so lost in your stories. I’m also interested to hear what travel tips you have even though I probably won’t be traveling for quite some time. I’m glad you two are home safe and enjoying the fruits of your dream. Keep on dreaming for you never know when those dreams might become a reality.

Peace, love, and all good things to you,

Me xxxooo

Hi Jess,

Please make sure if you are in the area you stop at work to say hi! Don’t forget me. Did you have a big adjustment when came home? I know John did after all of his traveling.

Take care!
Love, Leigh Ann
